Reflection on writing a narrative essay

This assignment was very difficult for me. Although I enjoyed writing my narrative, I had a very hard time making my essay personal. My original idea was to write my narrative on my grandma, but when we exchanged ideas in class, Karen told me that it might be better to write about something more personal and that sometimes the unhappy stories are better than happy stories. I decided to write about my relationship with my dad, because while I love him incredibly much, I have a very difficult time with him. My first draft I just glazed over the difficult parts because it was hard to write about something painful but in my second draft I tried to be much more descriptive and go deeper into my dad’s character.

I learned so much from writing this narrative. Writing about my dad helped me sort my feelings about his behavior and also focus on what I love about his personality. ¬†While it was not easy writing about something personal that I usually don’t share with people, I am glad we were assigned to write narratives.
